A Pesky Teenager? Us?

Hip hip hooray! It’s our birthday.

Yup, this month marks a new milestone. It’s been thirteen years since we began introducing bagasse compostable packaging to the South African market, officially launching GREEN HOME.

Back then, the company had a staff of two: Catherine Morris and Phindi Dlamini. Both were working out of their garages and both had a passion for the environment. And they shared a vision of bringing change to SA’s packaging sector. To sum it up, they wanted to start a biodegradable revolution.

This was before the plastic pollution crisis hit mainstream news outlets and became household knowledge. Back then, when Catherine and Phindi told people about compostable and biodegradable products, the reply was often, “Huh? Why do we need that?”

Today, the need for compostable packaging is widely recognized and understood all too well. Consumer awareness grows every day, and people are demanding both less packaging and, where necessary, biodegradable packaging.

We’re part of a much bigger movement. And, with the longest history of selling nothing else, over the years GREEN HOME has grown into South Africa’s compostable packaging specialist. Today, we have a comprehensive range of products and a staff of 30.

Onward and Upward

We’re starting to look pretty grown up, yet we’re still the same bright-eyed kid inside, staying true to our core vision. We still supply biodegradable packaging and nothing else, all made from natural, plant-based raw materials.

We’ve also upgraded our storage and sales offices over the years. Check out the pics below of Catherine, exhausted and happy, after offloading a container into her lounge in the early days. Today, we have warehouses and sales offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and supply across South Africa and beyond. And, Catherine has her lounge back.

Of course, none of this growth would be possible without our clients. Some have been with us from the early days. And many are new recruits to the biodegradable revolution. To all of you, thank you!! You are the whole reason we began this journey 13 years ago. We’re so excited to keep growing together.
