Bioplastic industry on the up!

Compostable logo

According to this industry website, over 500 bioplastics manufacturers companies already exist, and are expected to increase ten fold by 2020 to over 5000. The bioplastic industry, which is estimated to be growing at about 10% pa is set to increase to 25-30% by 2020.

  1. All fossil fuel based plastics including ‘degradable’ plastics are made from fossil fuel non-renewable resources(oil and gas), manufacture of these plastics is responsible for producing millions of tonnes of greenhouse gasses worldwide in manufacturing, in fact polyethylene and polypropylene produce DOUBLE their own weight in CO2 emissions, Nylon and certain high performance plastics are way higher!

The world needs to invest $45 trillion in energy in coming decades, build some 1,400 nuclear power plants and vastly expand wind power in order to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, according to an energy study released Friday, and yet plastics manufacturers and especially buyers of those plastics are still happy to pollute the atmosphere with CO2 generating plastics!!

The answer to reducing CO2 levels and thus climate change, and lower yield of food crops or failed food crops caused by that, is to produce and buy more plant based plastics 😉

Plant based plastics are biodegradable and compostable(many compostable at home) and certified as such.

Plant based plastics REDUCE greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as the plants grow. Growing more plants for plastic would REDUCE greenhouse gases and help reverse climate change AND crop failures.

One study shows that “every pound of soy-based polymers produced instead of petroleum-based removes 2.1 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere”.

Another study shows that in manufacture, plant based plastics use 30% less energy and create just 25% of the greenhouse gases that fossil fuel plastics do. Also starch based plastics consume 2190 kg of greenhouse gasses per 1000 kg of plastic whilst the plants are growing.

Check out these for Bioplastic and Bioplastic products 😉

The products are FDA approved for food contact in the EU and USA.

  2. Maybe you can take a loak at a blog dedicated to Bioplastics:
