Building with Hemp at Yiza Ekhaya
It’s all happening! We are busy building with Hemp on the Yiza Ekhaya Soup Kitchen site. It seems like so long ago that we were discussing potentially using natural raw materials to rebuild Mickey’s structure; debating the pros and cons and finally deciding to go for it. And boy are we glad we did!
Right now, as we speak, we are mixing up Hempcrete and packing it into the walls.
There are so many benefits from building with Hemp. Hemp is renewable and carbon neutral. It’s environmentally-friendly and the building will have superior insulation and air quality. This is the kind of natural, plant based material that we really believe in at GREEN HOME.
Aside from the predictable benefits of building with natural materials, we have found that there is a community of people who support the kindness to earth that this kind of building is all about. This community of people have really showed up to help.
We put a call out for people to volunteer and help us build on the weekends. People from all over Cape Town have joined in and helped. No experience was necessary. Volunteers worked alongside locals.
There is one more weekend left to finish the hemp walls. Anyone is welcome to join us. Gather some mates or come alone. We meet at 10am on Saturday and Sunday outside Knead in Muizenburg and drive through in convoy. More details are on the Yiza Ekhaya Soup Kitchen’s Facebook page.
Thanks to Monique Bermeister for the super pictures!
