GREEN HOME is launching South Africa’s first bottle and bottle cap made 100% from plants. And what’s more… it’s made right here in SA.
Over the last few years, people and companies around the world have tried to innovate various bottles that are more environmentally friendly than petroleum-based PET bottles. GREEN HOME has high environmental standards, and up until now none of these have met our requirements, which include being 100% made from renewable plants and certified compostable.
We have finally found, not just a bottle, but a cap made entirely of plants. Our objective is to bring this bottle and cap to market and to make it as affordable as possible. For this reason we are working as closely with all agents involved to bring this to you at the best possible price. GREEN HOME’s objective is to make Plant Based Packaging the Norm. And we can only do this by providing high quality products at good prices.
PLA is an acronym for polylactic acid. The building block of PLA is lactic acid which is a common natural element found in our own bodies and in the natural environment. This means bacteria in the natural environment already know how to break it down. The raw material for PLA is an annually renewable feedstock such as maize or sugarcane. Read more about PLA here.
Because PLA breaks down so easily and has a short lifespan, it’s the perfect material for things that you want to have a short lifespan. Like food packaging. Things shouldn’t last for longer than they need to.
Production of PLA produces around 60% less greenhouse gasses and 50% less fossil fuels in their production than PET bottles.
About the bottle
We are launching 3 different bottle sizes: 300ml, 500ml and 1,5 litre. The universal cap size fits all bottles. The 500ml comes in two different bottle wall thicknesses. The one uses more PLA material, so weighs 22grams and the other uses less and weighs 16g.
We can also make custom size bottles, but these will have higher minimum order quantities, and longer lead times.

What can PLA bottles be filled with?
Non-carbonated water, soft drinks, milks, juices, pulps, sanitizers, detergents, cleaning products and more.
What happens at the end of your Bottle’s Life?
Firstly, are you sure it’s over? PLA bottles are re-fillable, without the chance of leaching out harmful chemicals. This means you can re-use your bottle over and over, extending the life of your bottle before it eventually turns to compost.
Because the PLA bottle and lid are made from plants, and certified compostable, they will break down into their natural components of water, carbon dioxide and humus in composting conditions. This means your water bottle breaks down into the same matter that your kitchen waste breaks down. Isn’t that amazing?
In the tests that we’ve run we’ve found PLA breaks down very quickly in temperatures above 55°C. Both Reliance Compost and Y Waste have run their own tests and confirmed that the bottle and cap break down in less than 150 days.
If the bottle does get burnt, either in a Waste to Energy facility, or out in the open, unlike petroleum-based products, no harmful gases are released.
Factory PLA waste is easily recycled to make new bottles. It is technically possible to recycle PLA, however there is no recycling plant to currently recycle used PLA bottles in SA yet.

When it comes to food packaging, we always promote re-usable packaging first. If it has to be disposable, make sure it’s made from renewable materials that are compostable. Packaging should last for as long as it’s needed. Not longer.
