The RMR Makana Green Fun Run took place on Sunday 1 May 2016
This year they made use of biodegradable cups. We stock single walled cups which are perfect for serving cold drinks at events. The cups are made locally from FSC certified sustainable paper which has been lined with a thin layer of corn starch bioplastic. The cups are compostable after use.
After the athletes crossed the finish line, they received cool spring water in the biodegradable cups, and then they were invited to scoop up some potting soil into the used cup and insert a Spekboom cutting – to take home and plant!
How is that for a great event greening idea? And it gets better still.
Funds raised at the event went towards greening Makana and making the town more sustainable. This year, the Makana Environmental Education Forum will receive all Green Fun Run donations, and Ntsika Secondary School will receive 19 indigenous trees, planted in honour of the winners.
On Tuesday 17 May at 11:00am, winners (or their representatives) planted their symbolic prizes at Ntsika Secondary School, Extension 7. The ceremony was attended by the Chair of the RU Environmental Committee, Prof Hugo Nel, and other dignitaries.
