Mandela Day Tree – preneur project

GreenHome attended the Western Cape 110% green Mandela Day program held at Spier.  We received an Invitation letter from Helen Zille.

We are taking part in the Western Cape’s 110% Green Initiative, which calls for local businesses to link green to the economy.

Tree planting

Our 67 minutes were donated to Tree-preneurs. This project gives people in extremely poor communities the chance to earn money growing indigenous trees and plants. Once a seedling reaches the height of 15cm, it can be exchanged for vouchers for food, clothing, agricultural goods, tools, bicycles or school and university fees.

On 18 July, Mandela Day, we joined children from Blikkiesdorp, Delft, to transplant seedlings. Spier has been composting food waste on the farm and collecting plastic milk and yoghurt containers to be recycled into seedling containers.

We had a really super day. Planting trees is fun work. Planting trees for a great cause, fun and rewarding. Planting trees for great cause in compost made from composted food waste – a fun, rewarding and super satisfying way to spend Mandela Day.
