Turning Food Packaging into Soil Looks like This.
Something really cool happened a few weeks ago.
You may recall us talking animatedly about our partnership with MTN Bushfire, back at the beginning of winter.
To quickly recap, this iconic African festival is ‘closing the loop’ on waste in their Global Food Village, with our 100% compostable food packaging.
We were at the fest in early June. It was lekker to see people enjoying their meals in our compostable packaging. And, to see the 3 bin system in action, with all the dedicated compost bins.
We also met the festival’s Green Team. We witnessed all the crucial work they do: collecting waste, sorting it and starting the compost piles.
It was very, very cool.
Now, fast-forward to the start of this month, which is when went back to see how things were getting on.
And, here’s the thing, while we already knew all the packaging was getting composted on site…
Actually seeing it is always incredibly special.
The compost piles which were started after the fest, had matured into lush, vibrant soil.
And, this fertile compost was being spread out over the festival grounds to replenish the lawns (which take a bit of a beating with the 20,000 plus crowd!).
Here’s a whistle-stop summary, in pictures, of the whole closed-loop process – of food packaging being turned into soil:

Exciting, right?!
Instead of becoming waste, the food packaging becomes part of rich compost, which provides valuable nutrients to a new generation of plants.
This is how MTN Bushfire diverted 4 tons of organic waste from landfill, and created good-for-the-earth compost instead. This is what a sustainable future looks like. A future where we stop piling waste up in landfills and get in-sync with Nature.
