Compostable packaging: In a waste free loop
Our core vision is for packaging to exist in a waste free loop.
Waste free loops are efficient, in sync with the natural world, regenerative, healthier, and more resilient.
They also reduce pollution and, of course, minimise waste.
GREEN HOME compostable packaging is made from biodegradable, plant based materials. Composting products after use, together with food waste, can create compost to feed the next generation of plants. Thereby closing the loop on waste.
Nature’s operating system
Waste free, cyclical systems are found everywhere in Nature and are a fundamental part of our planet’s operating system. These cyclical systems have been perfecting for millions of years. That’s a lot of R&D.
There are many versions of waste free loops, depending on which materials and processes are involved. But they always include a cycle of growth, use and then decay with each step feeding into the next.
It’s amazing that all organic matter on Earth can be broken down to be used again. And this exceptional process is essential to life – it’s how life regenerates itself.
This process happens, of course, through biodegradation and is a form of organic recycling. Indeed, organic recycling is the most widespread, effective and efficient recycling that takes place on Earth. It’s different to the recycling humans do with paper and tin cans (often called technical recycling), but there are similarities.
Through organic recycling, materials can get used again and again in a circular loop. This process can continue indefinitely, because it regenerates itself as it goes.
Breaking out of linear, waste producing systems
In recent times, humans have created many linear, waste producing systems that are at odds with our planet. We’re seeing the results of these in the plastic pollution crisis and the pollution of rivers and waterways, for example.
Linear systems are often convenient in the (very) short term, but disastrous in medium and longer terms, causing harms that accumulate.
Circular systems regenerate as they go. Linear systems deplete as they go.
To create sustainable systems, we must ensure they are circular and regenerative.
Biodegradable materials and compostable packaging offer a fantastic opportunity to reduce, and even eliminate waste. By composting all our organic waste, we can create an effective waste free loop. One that is in positive alignment with our planet and feeds nutrients back to soils and plants. Because its regenerative, this is a system that can be successful far into the future.
