Biodegradables and methane – not such a stink afterall.
In an ideal world all biodegradable packaging and other materials would be composted, but sadly this is not yet happening, due to lack of knowledge, desire and infrastructure. Worst case scenario for biodegradable packaging (or any biodegradable material for that matter) is to end up in a landfill, and concern has been expressed that green waste in landfills contributes to higher levels of the greenhouse gas methane being released. A recent study of NatureWorks bioplastics has shown this not to be the case however. Read the full story on Plastics Today.
