Another Great Year of Composting Success with MTN Bushfire
We were thrilled to return as Official Compostable Packaging Partner at MTN Bushfire 2025 – one of Africa’s most iconic festivals. Each year, it brings over 20,000 people together in the spirit of music, creativity, and positive change.
We just love being a part of this phenomenal event, and assisting them to make soil instead of waste.

For the third year running, GREEN HOME supplied 100% compostable, plant-based food packaging, and all meals in the Global Food Village were served in packaging that’s made to return to the Earth.
This year, MTN Bushfire successfully diverted an impressive 6,615 kgs of food waste and compostable packaging from landfill – up from 4,000 kgs in 2024. Fantastic!

Compostable Packaging for a Cleaner Festival
The Global Food Village is a major hub of activity at MTN Bushfire, where festival goers gather to share meals and flavours from across the continent. And thanks to the festival’s commitment to sustainability, every food stall used compostable packaging made from renewable plant materials.
From cutlery and cups to clamshells and serviettes, all food service items were selected for their ability to break down naturally – and be turned into compost instead of waste. This reduces environmental impact, and allows for a cleaner, more circular system.

Smart Waste Sorting: MTN Bushfire’s 3 Bin System
At the heart of MTN Bushfire’s waste management approach is the 3 bin system, which separates waste at the source into:
- Compostables (food scraps + compostable packaging)
- Recyclables (glass, cans, paper etc.)
- Landfill (anything that can’t be composted or recycled)
Clear signage, colour-coded bins and dedicated waste stations helped festival goers put their waste in the right place-keeping compostables out of landfill and helping make large-scale composting possible. 2025 also saw the addition of Waste Warriors, who engaged with the public, helped educate and assist festival goers to use the correct bins.
It’s a practical system that boosts environmental awareness and encourages festival goers to take responsibility.
The Green Team & On-Site Composting
Behind the scenes, the Green Team made it all happen. This dedicated crew sorted and managed waste throughout the event, helping ensure full separation and effective composting.
All organic waste – including food and GREEN HOME’s compostable packaging – gets composted on-site, creating healthy compost that feeds the soil of the MTN Bushfire Festival grounds. This closed-loop system is a powerful example of how events can manage their waste responsibly, while giving something back to the land that hosts them.
A Model for Sustainable Festivals
With over 20,000 attendees, MTN Bushfire proves that sustainability at scale is possible. By choosing compostable packaging, sorting waste at the source, and composting on-site, the festival is building a culture of environmental responsibility – without compromising on fun, flavour, or creativity.
We’re honoured to be part of this growing partnership and can’t wait to see what’s next.
Thank you, MTN Bushfire, for leading the way to a more collaborative, sustainable and creative future.
